Abstract

On July 18, 1815, after the defeat at Waterloo and the Emperor’s second abdication on June 22, and thanks largely to the intrigues of the regicide Fouché, Louis XVIII reentered Paris on July 18, 1815, amidst the rejoicing of the royalists. A new era had now dawned in France. It would be a new era for Augustin-Louis Cauchy also; an age more to his liking, more compatible with his interest and ambitions. Since 1812, he had been nurturing a deep desire to embark on a career in science. He had produced studies of merit and had the support of influential people, but he had not been able to realize his hopes.
