Abstract

The need for efficient product and process improvement in industry has led to increased interest in designed experiments. Sometimes these experiments must be quite large and highly fractionated in order to acquire knowledge about all of the desired factors. We show graphical displays that we have developed and used in analyzing data from several large experiments. Our goals are to analyze the data quickly, finding the important effects without being misled by a portion of the data that may be bad, and to produce plots that facilitate discussions with our non-statistical colleagues about conclusions drawn from the data. We also consider several statistical issues that arise, such as the effects of outliers, interpretations when the design is not balanced, and ways to indicate the size of the experimental noise.
