Abstract

Perhaps I should also begin with a personal reminiscence, although Steve’s influence on my work is not as dramatic as on Tudor’s. Around 1970—Jerry and I can’t quite seem to agree on the day this occurred—but it was during a period of time when universities were in a state of revolution perhaps, chaos at least, and many of us wanted to turn our attention from so-called pure mathematics to things that seemed to have more to do with the real world. And at that time, even astronomy seemed closer to the real world than some of the things I was doing. So I was very excited about Steve’s giving a series of lectures on celestial mechanics. And I think it was listening to those lectures that sort of brought me back actively to symplectic geometry, where I’ve been ever since. It’s a little bit like the grand tour of the planets, where you’re in outer space. Every once in awhile you come close to a planet, a real solid mass, and you take a quick trip around the planet, and then you’re back in outer space again.
