Tests on Independence of VNTR Alleles in the Chinese Population in Hong Kong

Abstract

The issue of independence of fragment lengths within and between VNTR loci is a controversial topic in DNA profiling (fingerprinting). This paper discusses a battery of tests and applies them for testing independence of VNTR data for the Chinese population in Hong Kong. The independence assumption seems to be satisfied generally. This finding is very different from those obtained by Geisser and Johnson (1993) that the assumption is largely invalid for Blacks, Caucasians and Hispanics. Some discussion on the validity of the tests is also given.
