Abstract

As a mathematician I had been doing quite a bit of travelling—a conference here, an invitation to give a colloquium lecture there, and a meeting of the AMS somewhere else—but most of it was of the one or two night variety, involving flights lasting two hours or four. About the middle 1960’s a few bigger opportunities came along and I could see a little more of the world. It began with a bang in 1964 with a trip to Sydney in January.
