Abstract

In eary 1984 I received a telephone call from Paul Halmos — that was before he converted to e-mail — during which he said, among other things, that he would like to be someplace with more sunny days. The Bloomington winter seemed long. A telephone call from Paul was not unusual; I was coeditor of the Problem Section of the Monthly, for which Paul was at that time editor-in-chief. He asked whether I happened to know of any open positions in California. I responded that I didn’t, but I would think about it. When I had, I called him and asked him whether he might consider Santa Clara, a place I suspect he knew little about at that stage. But I pointed out one salient fact about Santa Clara — we do see the sun a lot. I raised the question of his joining us at Santa Clara with some hesitation because, though we may have good weather, Santa Clara is not the kind of institution at which Paul had spent his career: the Institute for Advanced Study, Syracuse, Chicago, Michigan, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara, and Indiana. Our department is undergraduate, with approximately 20 faculty.
