Abstract

After meeting with Dan, I take a taxi home—with jet lag, driving seems like a bad idea. As we near home, I ponder Dan’s advice. Right now, I think of procurement challenges in relation to how to negotiate externally and manage suppliers. It hadn’t occurred to me that internal negotiations in relation to procurement would be a problem. But again, if Heartland’s procurement organization is indeed a decade or so behind ours, I might be up against a lot of internal antagonism. People don’t like change. Thinking about the implications of this, I can’t help but wonder if Dan was trying to dissuade me from accepting the offer. Yet the advice appears honest enough—and it’s not Dan’s way to hold back ambition.
