Abstract

Mallorca. An unusually mild and sunny Thursday morning for this time of year. The light breeze coming in from the sea is gently caressing the faces of Heartland’s procurement staff whom I am watching. They are sitting—not all of them perfectly at ease—in the stylish meeting room of the modern 5-star hotel my assistant booked for the summit. The glass front of the room has been removed, virtually turning the conference area into part of the sea-facing terrace where groups of lounge furniture are scattered around here and there, accompanied by small tables offering a variety of seasonal fruit and local snacks. The podium is arranged where the glass doors had been before, inviting the audience to let their eyes wander from the speaker to the terrace, reflecting the golden morning light, to the breathtaking view of the deep blue sea, framed by a rocky, maquis-covered coast and decorated with a handful of white, slowly moving sails.
