Abstract

Conclusion The chair concludes the presentation of the book with a summary of its assets: • it gives a precise description of the situation with respect to the role of the history of mathematics in the teaching and learning of mathematics throughout the world; • it discusses the philosophical and theoretical principles behind the integration of history in mathematics education; • it presents examples of this integration in the classroom, both with negative and with positive outcome; • it is accessible from various perspectives: for the teacher who wants to teach a specific subject, the teacher trainer, the curriculum developer, the librarian, the educational researcher. Over all: history is present within mathematics teaching world-wide; there are many positive results but also problems still to be solved such as the level of knowledge of the teachers and the rigidity of the curriculum in many countries.
