Abstract

Conclusions We suggest that an awareness of the politics that are relevant to engaged collaborative research is essential for researchers in information systems and management, and that on occasions an active role in organisational politics may be called for, to enable the research to happen and to ensure that it continues. This brings with it certain problems of ethical practice. We find these issues though little discussed, even though we observe that many renowned researchers are themselves extremely adept at interpreting and adapting to the politics of the situation. Politics cannot be avoided, since even the researcher who decides to avoid organisational politics is taking a stance that must be defended by political actions. So, with collaborative work within organisations becoming the predominant form of research in IS this is a topic to which more attention must be given.
