Solving Optimization Problems in GAMS®

Abstract

In this chapter, the General Algebraic Modelling System or GAMS® will be introduced. GAMS is a modeling environment for mathematical programming and optimization purposes, which simplifies the model development process. Arguably, the best way to introduce GAMS is through examples. We have followed this approach with MATLAB®, and we will do the same for GAMS. We will start with a notorious mathematical problem, the circle packing in a square problem. We have presented a closely related example in Chap. 3 (Sect. 3.4). Circle packing in a square is a problem in applied mathematics, where the aim is to pack n unit circles into the smallest possible square (with side length L). The mathematical formulation is a nonlinear programming problem with inequality only constraints.
