Abstract

Pharmaceutical industries generally employ multistage production facilities with multiple shared resources to produce several low-volume products, and efficient scheduling frameworks can greatly aid in responding to demand fluctuations while utilizing the capital-intensive assets efficiently. In this chapter, we present an overview of the production scheduling models applicable to single-unit to multistage production environments. We discuss the general concepts and challenges regarding the implementation of the scheduling methods in batch pharmaceutical manufacturing and introduce mathematical programming models that can incorporate additional complexities related to changeover cost, time, and shared resources. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of the models discussed in this chapter through multiple case studies.
