Abstract

This chapter presents a study on the analysis of portable asset management strategies in hospitals. The problem addressed here is the unavailability of the portable assets when they are needed due to lost or hoarding, which lead to significant amount of staff time for search and underutilization of the assets. A simulation-based decision support tool is constructed to analyze the different processes and the impact of RFID technology on the widely adopted portable asset management models. The results suggest the substantial gain could be realized by implementing RFID systems. The amount of gains changes based on the system models and processes.
