Defining Knowledge Technology

Abstract

This chapter defines knowledge technology. To do so, it must start with the definition of science and technology. In Japan, where science and technology promoted economic development, the concepts of soft science and soft technology were defined around 1990 when interest in the environment and quality of life was at its highest. Knowledge science emerged in such an environment. It began with the interaction between systems thinking and knowledge management, which is an essential hypothesis of this book. This chapter defines the purpose of knowledge technology as managing knowledge-intensive activities and knowledge generated from them, emphasizing the importance of the cooperation of systems thinking and knowledge management to achieve this purpose.
