Abstract

This chapter examines how the evolving regulatory landscape influences the development of sustainability structures within banks. It focuses on the influence of European Union (EU) sustainability directives, particularly the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR), and EU Taxonomy, on internal organization, roles, and responsibilities. Drawing on interviews, it highlights how banks navigate regulatory pressure, including issues with interpretation, compliance fatigue, and uneven capacity. It examines the perceived benefits and burdens of regulation, the complexity of aligning multiple frameworks, and the tension between compliance and transformation. While regulation is often viewed as a driver of sustainability, this chapter argues that without adequate support and integration, it may also overwhelm limited internal resources and crowd out strategic work.
