Abstract

To understand the structure of the supply chain, we have carried out field surveys in various parts of the country. This chapter presents the methodology used for these surveys. We have captured the supply chain in two parts in the following chapters. In Chap. 6 , we discuss the first part of the study mapping the supply chain starting from the fishermen to the wholesalers, and in Chap. 8 , the supply chain from the wholesaler to the retailer to finally reach the consumer is described. The first part is based on the survey we carried out in Kochi, Kerala. The methodology followed for this part of the survey in Kochi is discussed in the current chapter. To understand the supply chain for river and other freshwater fish products, we visited the state of Assam. The survey methodology followed for this is presented here as well. As locales of retailing are different from production, we have conducted a separate survey to identify and exhaustively classify various channels of fish distribution to the final consumers, and the methodology followed for that too is delineated in this chapter.
