Abstract

This discovery moved List in cooperation with Dr. Isaac Hiester, nephew of the Governor of Pennsylvania, on building the Little Schuylkill Railroad, one of the earliest railways in the USA. After the discovery of the coal deposit, List tried to finance the project. Together with Dr. Isaac Hiester he bought the needed acres. After many failed effforts, the two business partners finally managed to get the necessary credit from the Thomas Biddle bank in Philadelphia. For the management of the construction works, Friedrich List was able to recruit engineer Moncure Robinson (1802–1891), who was then just 27 years old. The cornerstone ceremony for the Little Schuylkill railroad took place on June 1, 1829 and the entire route of 22 1/2 miles was completed on November 8, 1831. During the first year, the waggons were pulled by mules and horses. The two locomotives “Comet” and “Catawissa” which Friedrich List ordered in Liverpool arrived in the winter of 1832/33.
