Abstract

Then the focus is turned to List’s exile in the USA from 1825–1832, his relations to General Lafayette and President Andrew Jackson and his role as editor of the “Readinger Adler” are presented. At first, List tried to escape the restraint by fleeing to neighboring countries and to pursue his honorable rehabilitation from there. After two years he voluntarily returned to Württemberg, but was imprisoned immediately. After serving two-thirds of this sentence, he was released early on condition that he would immigrate to United States forever. List came to the New World with his family in the early summer of 1825. Initially, at the invitation of General Lafayette, he took part in the last part of his triumphant tour of the Atlantic coastal states. Then List settled in Reading PA, where he took over the editon of the “Readinger Adler”.
