Abstract

It starts with an overview of the colorful biography of Friedrich List (1789–1846) and his historical merits as an international classic of political economy and a railway pioneer. List was born on August 6, 1789 in the Free Imperial City of Reutlingen, 30 miles from Stuttgart. After a steep career in the administration of the Kingdom of Württemberg, in which he carried out the first emigrant survey on behalf the king in 1817 and thus founded the first opinion research, he gave the impetus to found the State Economics Faculty of the University of Tübingen. This department became the first economics faculty in Germany. List was appointed as a professor on the faculty`s first three chairs. Three years later he was elected as a member of the Württemberg parliament. Because of his radical demand for the abolition of internal tariffs between the 39 German territorial states and his fierce criticism of the political conditions in Württemberg, he was expelled from parliament an sentenced to 10 months imprisonment.
