Abstract

In this chapter we describe the existing methods of measuring shadow economy. We follow the main division defined in the literature, and thus present the measurement methods divided into direct and indirect ones. We recall the most important assumptions related to discussed methods, as well as we point out their major advantages and weaknesses. In this way we locate our approach based on the survey study conducted among companies within another available estimates. This will enable the comparison of obtained results with the previous evidence on the extent of the shadow economy. We also report the existing data on the shadow economy in Poland, provided both by the Statistics Poland as well as another independent research institutes.
