Abstract

The chapter begins by analyzing Romania’s transition from a planned to a market economy and its economic development since then. It shows that economic policy during the transition was characterized by few solutions, stagnation, and socioeconomic challenges. EU accession, with the resulting funding and access to the single market, was interpreted as promising. However, the resulting economic progress did not address the country’s long-term structural weaknesses. A comprehensive analysis of macroeconomic, sectoral, and investment policies provides an overview of the remaining challenges and strengths of the Romanian economy.
