Abstract

This chapter examines Romania’s role in European energy security, highlighting its strategic location as both a distribution hub and a potential shield against dependence on Russian energy. It analyzes Romania’s energy trajectory within the evolving European energy security framework, focusing on how liberalization processes have created both vulnerabilities and opportunities. The chapter also explores how Russia has leveraged its proximity to hinder Romania’s energy progress since the early 2000s. Finally, it assesses Romania’s offshore and nuclear initiatives, emphasizing its potential to become a key actor in a diversified and resilient EU energy system amid growing geopolitical and infrastructural challenges.
