The Informal Domain of the Civil Society Ecosystem: Civic Initiatives

Abstract

This chapter presents five case studies of civic activism campaigns in Armenia, starting with the largest and longest environmental campaign to stop a mining project in a pristine forest. The other cases include a protest against changes in maternity leave law, a resistance to pension reform, a failed attempt to save an old building from demolition and a 2-week non-stop street campaign against an electricity price increase. The chapter highlights the similarities and differences and attempts to explain the successes and the failures of the activism campaigns analysed. We look at the gender dimension of each case, its scope, duration, the leadership structures and decision-making and the use of social media. We combine data assembled from documents, news reports and personal observations (in one case) with qualitative insights of activists relating their stories and experiences.
