Abstract

This chapter introduces the research agenda that led to the publication of this book. Combining Edwards’ (Civil society. Polity Press, Cambridge, 2013) and Howard’s (The Weakness of Civil Society in Post-Communist Europe. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2003) work, we conceptualise Armenian civil society as an ecosystem that has been negatively affected by the communist legacy of distrust and disengagement but has gradually recovered some of its diversity and complexity. Based on this approach, we propose three hypotheses to guide our inquiry. The chapter also presents a short history of the development of Armenian civil society and the structure of the book.
