Case Study 7: Low-Cost Inorganic Pigments

Abstract

A materials expert researcher developed a low-cost method for producing inorganic pigments, including blacks, blues, reds, etc. for the ceramic, paper, plastic and other industries. There is a wide range of colours and hues. Production cost is a fraction of competitive processes. Patents are awarded for many of the pigments and a large manufacturer offered to fund and co-develop further. However, further development stopped because some pigments were not sufficiently uniformly coloured and the researcher was unwilling to leave the lab and devote 100% to the start-up.
