Innovating Indonesia: Strategic Paths to Be Adopted from Neighbouring Countries

Abstract

Innovation has become a mantra for a nation’s competitiveness, though Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, can be considered lacking in this aspect compared to its neighbouring ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries, such as Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore. Therefore, this research analyzed the Global Innovation Index 2011 to 2021 from WIPO, Cornell, and SEAD, which is a leading benchmark tool for examining the state of global innovation. This was presented based on a review of literature related to innovation and the Global Innovation Index 2011–2021, with a focus on the qualities that Indonesia can adapt from its neighbouring ASEAN countries in order to significantly elevate its innovation level. This also revealed Indonesia’s stagnation concerning innovation compared to some of its ASEAN counterparts, as the country achieved a consistently low ranking in terms of infrastructure, human capital, research, and knowledge workers. This finding highlights the importance of improving infrastructure and education in the nation, specifically higher education institutions. The lack of innovation in the ease of conducting business as well as low creativity in export compared to Malaysia and Thailand may indicate the importance of clear strategic paths to enhance Indonesia’s innovation level by examining other Southeast Asian countries.
