Abstract

In Hard Ball (1999), Fort and Quirk note, “Eliminate the monopoly power of leagues and you transfer power from the insiders, owners, and players alike, to the outsiders, fans, and taxpayers.” In the more than 20 years since its publication, this point continues to motivate the bulk of work in sports economics.
