Effective Navigation: Technology and Participation in Decision-Visualization Environments

Abstract

This chapter explores the transformative potential of decision-visualization environments (DVEs) in tackling complex societal challenges through participatory frameworks. Highlighting the integration of advanced technologies such as simulations and visualizations, it underscores DVEs’ role in fostering informed decision-making at the intersection of science, society, and policy. Despite their promise, DVEs face challenges such as technical complexity, which can intimidate and hinder participant engagement, and the risk of technology overshadowing dialogue, reducing participants to passive data consumers. Inclusivity remains a struggle, as specialized knowledge can create barriers for diverse groups. The chapter discusses the need for inclusive facilitation and effective human–computer–content interaction, advocating for narrative techniques, artistic methods, and artificial intelligence assistant models to make complex information accessible and democratize participation. Recommendations for further research emphasize transdisciplinary collaboration and mobile infrastructure to improve accessibility. Through transdisciplinary collaboration, improved accessibility, and refined facilitation, DVEs can encourage deeper exploration, critical thinking, and collaborative learning. Embracing these innovations will allow DVEs to remain at the forefront of co-creating sustainable solutions for complex societal challenges.
