Abstract

This study was motivated by the question how team cognition influences the use and the effects of software development techniques in ISD teams. It was reasoned that team cognition may constitute a major influence when developers decide whether and how to apply ISD techniques to single tasks on the one hand, whereas ongoing and team-wide application of ISD techniques may lead to emergent effects on team cognition on the other hand. Two important and widely-adopted collaborative quality assurance techniques were examined in more detail: pair programming and peer code review. An analysis of extant literature showed that prior work generally ignored that collaborative quality assurance techniques are applied within the boundaries of ISD teams and may therefore be affected by and affect team cognition. What is more, research on team cognition in ISD teams is scarce, and studies connecting ISD techniques to team cognition are hard to find. Consequently, this study investigated how and why team cognition affects the task level appropriation of pair programming and peer code review on the one hand, and why continued application of these techniques affects team cognition and performance in ISD teams on the other hand.
