Agile Methods, Lean Development and the Change of Work in Software Development

Abstract

For a long time, agile methods such as Scrum and XP have been considered as an innovative niche for specialists in IT. This is changing profoundly. The combination of agile methods and the principles of “Lean Development” has become the foundation for a deep change in the organization of software development in general. Empowered teams, synchronized development processes, collective forms of knowledge and continuous improvement of processes are the central elements of a new state of the art in software development. This evolving organisation of work in the IT sector leads to a new situation for IT employees and to new working conditions. Based on empirical research this paper shows how the work of software developers has changed, which experiences they have made and which challenges they are confronted with.
