Abstract

The emergence of new complex systems such as artificial intelligence (AI) or collaborative robots (cobots) has taken the industry to a new industrial revolution that pursues the increase in efficiency and optimization of production by focusing on the synergy between humans and machines in order to combine the strengths of both elements to achieve common goals. In such a context, humans and machines can no longer be seen as isolated elements but as cooperative agents supporting each other in a shared workspace. This teaming between human and nonhuman agents inevitably requires the development of a common operational picture based on the exchange of relevant information. This paper presents an example of how human-machine teaming can be enhanced in an automotive plastic part industry that is intended to increase efficiency (reduce material waste) and productivity levels by introducing AI in the manufacturing process. Such collaborative environment requires special consideration for the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design for the development of a shared workspace in which the interchange of relevant information and the enhancement of situational awareness would play a key role in determining success.
