Abstract

In this chapter, we report on our experiences of a concrete case and describe an original approach to Design Thinking in manufacturing. We constitute the critical success factors of this approach, analyze the findings in depth, and share key takeaways both with regard to our specific case and to similar undertakings in large industrial organizations. In our case, we were operating at one local production site of a large multinational group, one of its final assembly lines for commercial aircraft, a very complex and highly regulated product. Using the three phases of (1) need finding, (2) prototyping & testing, and (3) implementing, we outline a simplified blueprint of how to introduce Design Thinking by engaging the final end user in the design and co-creation of new solutions.
