Abstract

Large companies currently face an existential crisis because of a series of new pressures that have emerged over recent decades in a global, digital economy. The model of the centralized, hierarchical firm that was hugely successful in an earlier phase of industrial capitalism seems less well-equipped to meet the challenges of today, particularly the need to innovate continually. Moreover, the discourse and practice of corporate governance and other regulatory pressures have often pushed firms in the wrong direction, resulting in an unhealthy focus on managing agency risks, short-term financial gains, and formalistic compliance.
