The Circular Bioeconomy: Concepts, Opportunities, and Limitations

Circular Bioeconomy (CB) represents a transformative shift in how we approach production and sustainability, integrating circular principles with bio-based systems. However, this shift involves complex trade-offs and systemic challenges, demanding a careful balance between economic, environmental, and social priorities. Adopting the CB model means addressing these intricacies, which this study examines from an economic and policy perspective. Key opportunities include growth in bio-based markets, creation of new jobs, and development of new business models. Nevertheless, significant barriers remain, including high initial investment costs, inconsistent policy frameworks, and competition for land and resources. To accurately assess the feasibility of CB, we propose adjusting traditional economic metrics to reflect cascading resource flows, environmental impacts, and policy instruments. A multidisciplinary approach is used to explore how systemic integration across biology, engineering, and economics can help realize the potential of CB. The findings suggest that CB has transformative potential to achieve sustainability and economic resilience. However, its success requires strong policy support, dedicated economic incentives, and innovative financing mechanisms to overcome existing barriers. This study provides critical insights into how CB can drive the transition to a more resilient, circular economy.
