Abstract

A commonly cited cause of failure of Lean implementations is the lack of holistic understanding of its underlying philosophy, and the implied logical sequencing of implementation steps that will ensure sustenance. Sans this comprehensive view, more often than not, Lean is perceived as a bundle of tools from which one can pick and implement based on convenience. While this may produce short-term results, they are not lasting. This chapter presents the guiding principles, underlying philosophy, and the corresponding tools, all at one place, to help the reader get a bird's eye view of Lean Management. This view will help the SME owner not only to make an educated choice of when, where, and how much of Lean implementation is suitable for her organization, but also get a realistic estimate and timing of resultant benefit.
