Abstract

After establishing a business, running it to satisfy all the requirements—legal, administrative and others—is not so easy. The real practical issues arise once the business has been set up and the manager faces the day-to-day problems. Running a business in most of the foreign lands and in India can be very different. There may be many unanticipated concerns, which can simply become unmanageable for an expatriate business manager, irrespective of the high position he may be holding in his transnational company. Getting the benefit of the experience of Indian colleagues and others—without bringing in the issues of ego—is of utmost importance so as to be able to cross the hurdles of bureaucracy, red-tape, regulations, different levels of executive in the government, inspectors from regulatory bodies, etc. Very often, the standard approach of running a business, as laid down in other global economies, simply does not work in India.
