Where Are We Headed? From Biobots, AI, Deepfakes, and a Negotiable Reality

Abstract

This chapter provides an outlook on the future of disinformation attacks and demonstrates that technological dynamism is further accelerating the threat. It explains how AI, large language models, and deepfakes hyper-personalize disinformation, reduce its cost, and increasingly blur the boundaries of reality. It describes emerging arsenals of attack such as autonomous bot networks/“thoughtnets”, agentic AI, generative content factories, narrative engines, as well as the fusion of cyber and disinformation attacks. In contrast, a developing ecosystem of new defense tools is outlined, including AI-driven detection, attribution, threat maps, and a multilayered 4D defense framework. The author concludes by arguing that, in a “post-reality” public sphere, companies must communicate more rapidly, transparently, and with greater emotional resonance to break information vacuums and narratives.
