Abstract

The Strom & Co. conglomerate offers numerous electricity, gas and oil-related services. With over 10,000 employees and several billion euros’ annual turnover the energy service provider is a medium-sized player on the European energy market. The success of green electricity companies, who are increasingly gaining a foothold on the market, has repeatedly prompted the conglomerate to consider including renewable energy sources in its own portfolio. The relevant investment capital is available as is the market knowledge. In recent years Strom & Co. has thus sponsored the research work of several institutes in the fields of photovoltaics, wind energy, bio-mass, solar heat and solar heat power plants and released a small number of large projects. Energy generation on a larger scale or involvement in other value chain stages, such as for example module manufacturing or raw materials production for r photovoltaics, have to date not been an issue. Possible acquisition objects have been considered, without however making any purchases. The company has invested considerable sums of money in its wide-ranging, rather uncoordinated activities and “experiments” in the field of renewable energies and can no longer justify the extent of these funds as merely “gathering experience”.
