Insights from Academic Research on Outsourcing

Abstract

There has been significant academic research within the outsourcing arena, a lot focussed on the drivers and benefits of outsourcing. There has also been more recently a focus on the risks emanating from outsourcing and the role of relational exchanges. Nevertheless, traditional research has been polarised between strong contracts and relational governance. There is now the emergence of research that suggests formal contracts and relational exchanges are complementary and both required for successful outsourcing. It is not enough to simply develop an understanding of how to build and foster relational governance, but to do so in the context of a formal contract.
