Abstract

This chapter addresses the innovative approaches of the German Consumer Goods and Coffee retailer Tchibo to improving human rights in global supply chains. The retailer’s programmes and strategies go beyond often applied control-based approaches such as auditing. They focus on the social relation between managers and workers as well as on incorporating new partners and perspectives. The first programme introduced by the author is the ‘Worldwide Enhancement of Social Quality (WE)’, a comprehensive supplier training program focusing on dialogue and participation and involving both workers and managers to create solutions for human rights challenges. WE builds on the principles of empowerment, dialogue and co-creation while putting the needs and desires of the actors in the factories center stage to drive change from within. A second approach introduced in this chapter is ‘Act on Living Wages’, a partnership with the global union IndustriALL and global retailers to improve wages in the industry by establishing industry collective bargaining. Both programmes show high impact potential and demonstrate Tchibo’s strong commitment in the field of human rights.
