Introduction to Systemic Human Resource Management

In this chapter, we introduce more about the theory and practice of Systemic Human Resource Management (Sys HRM). We argue that Sys HRM is an expanded HRM discipline that emerges from the interaction of conventional HRM with systems thinking and complexity science. By integrating characteristics of systems and complexity, Sys HRM offers a different perspective when formulating and defining problems and opportunities, and new methodologies and tools for addressing complex problems. HR managers and leaders who adopt and incorporate Sys HRM into their thinking and practices will have additional and valuable ways for navigating, solving, and dissolving the most difficult organizational challenges. These include how to remediate or enhance competencies required to perform twenty-first-century roles; prepare for future responsibilities and career advancement in the midst of increasing use of artificial intelligence; design, implement, and evaluate increasingly hybrid and virtual training; provide development support through mentoring and coaching; and generate novel approaches for educational assistance programs.
