Abstract

There is no silver bullet for changing behavior of social systemsSocial system. Yet in addition to everything presented in previous chapters, there are some qualities and concepts that may be necessary in making governanceGovernance and managing a more successful endeavor. Our capacity to learn and to adapt is well adjusted to linear and quadratic change but social systems are ill equipped to cope with exponential change. For super wicked issues time is not only running out but it is running out with exponentially growing speed. With exponential growthExponential growth now being the dominating patternPattern of social systemsSocial system, managing requires to be proactive, to prepare for unpredictable, sudden events. The only way out of the dilemmaDilemma to be proactive without relying on predictionsPrediction is to identify the structureStructure causing an unwanted pattern and then change it. Managing symptomsSymptom without addressing the underlying structural issues is neither wise nor sufficient. The faster the world changes, the more flexibilityFlexibility is needed.
