Abstract

The life sciences industry became firmly embedded in society’s consciousness, at the latest, through the onset of the global pandemic and its consequences for health and mental well-being. Many countries with large budgets, strong economies, and fast responses were ultimately unable to prevent, nationally and globally, millions of deaths, admissions to intensive care, and long-term damage to health. In addition, economic sacrifices were necessary, which will impact the entire global economy for years to come. This will not be the last crisis, and if mortality rates rise or a global health crisis is combined with, for example, severe storms and/or power failures, a very different dynamic could be created, resulting in different outcomes. This is one more reason for placing the life sciences industry at the head of the key technologies, supporting its innovation processes and projects and also talking about tax relief. In relation to Germany and Europe, the current time frame and positioning in the global competition of the life sciences industry and other sectors can essentially be expanded. This chapter has three aims: to increase awareness of the situation of the life sciences industry and other sectors, the framework conditions and the areas of innovation and their structure; to encourage the integration of life sciences into an overall construct; and to promote more activity through and for life sciences management.
