Abstract

The time to act is now. Even in the recovery phase after COVID-19, the industry cannot afford to further postpone the transition to more sustainable operations. Immediate measures and long-term initiatives go hand in hand. The aviation industry should not see becoming more environmentally sustainable primarily as a cost factor, but as a strategic opportunity that is also financially viable in the future. Aviation stakeholders should be open to far-reaching change at an early stage, as this will happen sooner or later anyway. First-movers will have advantages over laggards. Ambitious and coordinated efforts are needed from all key players in the aviation system to drive the decarbonisation of aviation fast enough and far enough.
