Abstract

Aviation is a key driver of global economic prosperity which has grown at an average annual rate of 5% in the past and is projected to continue to grow strongly in the future. By burning fossil fuels, aviation contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector which are also expected to grow. Aviation must mitigate its impact on climate change and adapt its strategies and technologies to achieve the targets the sector agreed upon in the Paris climate agreement. Pursuing environmental sustainability should not only seen as a cost but as an opportunity which can be lucrative for first movers who gain strategic advantages. Pathways toward sustainable aviation must include all subsystems of the industry and coordinated approaches must account for the interdependencies between different actors.
