Abstract

With the advent of big data, the competition for many businesses is to extract the actionable insights and do it fast. The streaming nature of big data requires equally performing the analytics in near real time. The many advances in technology from bigger storage capacity to faster processing power make it more possible to reach that goal. Conducting the analytics in near real time raises fundamental questions on how to ensure the integrity of the results while accommodating the need to go back in time, and conduct a postmortem investigation in case the results are wrong. If the data is changing in real time, unless we maintain some history of the data, it is almost impossible to determine whether the source of a problem is due to the data or to the analytics. Rules in place for data governance, and auditing of the analytics will have to change.
