Transformational Thinking

Abstract

We describe the fourth mode of dialectical thinking that we call transformational thinking, which in essence views entities as always having the potential for transformation, either developmentally or regressively. We illustrate transformational thinking with reference to the water in a geyser as it is transformed into steam, and then to a conceptual entity, Otto Scharmer’s “Theory U” a model of transformation. We then give examples of three levels of relational thinking. We conclude with a series of generic “mind-opening” questions designed to encourage transformational thinking.
