Abstract

Logistics road transportation is challenged by a reduction of fleet emissions with the target to decrease the impact on climate change. This leads to a transition from traditional fossil fuel-driven combustion engines to alternative propulsion systems, and will result in a considerable share of battery-electric-driven vehicles in the near future. In this context, a successful ramp-up of electric trucks requires both, dedicated vehicle technology providing sufficient driving range and a suitable charging infrastructure. The present article introduces to the latest status and development trends of battery-electric propulsion systems for commercial vehicles. In addition, requirements on future charging infrastructure are introduced and discussed, covering both charging technologies and the development of charging system networks.
