Abstract

Knowledge management is an important discipline as it organizes the knowledge resources necessary for innovation and sustainable competitive advantage. Thus, it becomes increasingly important in times of high fluctuation and retirements. With the rise of (generative) artificial intelligence (AI) and related technological advances, information systems supporting knowledge management processes are expected to improve. Still, research has not yet provided prescriptive knowledge on such AI-supported knowledge management systems. Therefore, we apply the design archaeology methodology and analyze the functionalities of successful knowledge repositories as a special class of knowledge management systems. We derive nine design principles and evaluate them using interviews with practitioners, showing a high relevance of the topic and the design knowledge. This study contributes to knowledge management and information systems literature by uncovering (already starting) change due to technological (AI) advances, deriving prescriptive knowledge on knowledge management systems, and providing rigor to the design archaeology methodology.
