Abstract

Social inclusion of impaired individuals through information systems (IS) design is pivotal yet challenging. Current IS designs and designers often prioritize functionality, neglecting critical societal and structural aspects. Existing inclusive design approaches fall short in fully addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by impaired individuals, resulting in a lack of clear guidance for creating truly inclusive IS. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic literature review, unveiling six inclusive design principles. These principles integrate insights from various disability models and span different inclusive design approaches. They offer guidance in crafting IS that meet the diverse needs and abilities of impaired individuals while addressing societal and structural barriers, ultimately fostering greater inclusivity of IS designs.
